The
Largest icefield south of Alaska, shimmering glacial ice and snow
cover some 389 sq. km. (233 sq. mi.). An exciting 55 minute Snowcoach
Tour will take you out onto the Athabasca Glacier, a tongue of
the Columbia Icefield, for an awe-inspiring glimpse of icy crevasses
and ice-fed streamlets. Or, join a guided Glacier Ice-walk and
visit the Icefields Interpretive Centre for informative exhibits
and slide shows. Seasonal accommodation, dining and camping
available. Hiking trails nearby. Starting point for numerous glacier
travel and alpine climbing routes.
The
5 km (3 mi) Ice Explores excursion onto the icy slopes of the Athabasca
Glacier is Jasper Park's most popular tour. Below the glacier headwall
participants can see onto ice 400 years old and over 300 meters (1000
feet) thick. Avoid the peak-time rush by taking your tour before 11 am
or after 2:30 pm.
