Take a two day workshop in voice and physical expression!
In two days Jane will walk students through a musical repertoire that will expose them to simple choral arrangements of current popular songs while the vocal techniques that they will learn will blend classical and popular styles of singing.
She will bring some choral arrangements of her own to work with the group while having them design a work of their own over the two days.
She also brings elements of movement and physical expression into the work so this workshop will appeal to anyone who is interested in theatre as well.
“What I really love doing is building confidence in singers and getting them to express themselves in ways, and pertaining to topics, that they find important. I love the challenge of working with individuals of varying skill and knowledge levels and when they create music I get them to develop abstract scores so there really is no need for knowledge of music notation or singing experience.”
Jane Berry moved to Edmonton to start her PhD of Philosophy in Music Theory in the fall of 2011. Shortly after her arrival she began singing with Pro Coro Canada and quickly became integrated within the local choral community. She is the director of ETown Minors (a choir developed for at risk youth), section lead for ETown Augmented and in-house arranger for both groups. She is co-founder of Femme vocal ensemble, has taught a number of courses at the University of Alberta, sings with various new music ensembles, volunteers with local youth and works as a composer and visual artist.
Jane holds a Masters of Arts in Music Theory from the University of Ottawa (2011), a Bachelors of Music in Composition from Acadia University (2005), and is currently working on a degree in Education at the University of Alberta.

WHAT IS ART BATTLE?
Art Battle® is live competitive painting. Painters create the best work they can in 20 minutes. As they work, patrons move around the easels, closely watching the creative process. The medium is acrylic paint and the tools allowed are brushes, palette knives or any non-mechanical implements. At the end of the round, the audience votes democratically for their favourite painting and bids in silent auction to take the work home. Check artbattle.com for local listings!
