Skating Horseshoe Lake

Skating Horseshoe Lake

Normaly when you say Horseshoe Lake, you think of cliff jumping into the deep water in the summer.

But when the lake get frozen, the skates come out and play. Timing for this activity is everything, since photographing this article, I have not hit the same conditions. Cold conditions and freeze thaw temperatures help smooth out the ice surface.

Being the first to get on the ice, call it crazy or brave, getting on the ice early gets your heart pumping as you never know what can happen. The ice on this particular day was clear of snow and it felt like it was just around 2 inches thick. There was definitely lots of creaking and cracking. Nonetheless, this day was spectacular and the we did not fall through the ice.

These natural lakes are not maintained by parks or any outfitters, use at your own caution!

There are a couple of lakes that are maintained, Lake Mildred at #fairmontJPL and Pyramid Lake #BanffPursuitCollection

~ Warning ~
Ice can be thin in spots even in the coldest temperatures, so caution is advised when ever attempting to venture into these areas. Disclaimer: This post does not endorse the skating on thin ice.
