Stutfield Glacier

A fairly gradual accent to the glacier

Stutfield Peak is beside Mt. Kitchener, the glacier here is so beautiful, it is hard to turn back. I just want to explore the whole area, it will have to be put off for another exploratory trip next time.

At this time of the year, we used Cross-country skis and snowshoes for this ski-tour. The snowpack was not as deep as expected and there was minimal post hole-ing with the snowshoes.

The first section of this explore Jasper adventure is relatively flat which makes our equipment a great choice for that day.

There is no official trail to Stutfield Glacier. You pretty well have to make your own tracks. The wind covers the track quite fast because it is a wide open creek bed of the receeding Glacier.

Give yourselves 4-6 hours to do this trek plus the driving time to the trailhead from Jasper. If you are staying at the Beauty Creek Hostel, it only takes a few minutes to the trailhead. Parking is just on the side of the road. My GPS map started way too early and did not get an accurate track. I am just going to guess it is about 6-7 km from the road one direction.

Warning: make yourselves aware of avalanche zones and even check in with Parks Canada when ever going into the back country.
